I've now beaten the main game of Super Princess Peach (all that I have left to do now is beat some hidden levels and collect a few more secrets), and I can tell you this:
This is an awesome game.
The story: Bowser's a bad guy. You've all played video games, and you haven't been hiding under a rock since 1985, so you know that. What you don't know is that, occasionally, he can come up with an effective (if not extremely ingenius) plan. His plan this time is to use a powerful magical relic called the Vibe Scepter to kidnap the Princess.
The Vibe Scepter can manipulate the emotions of others, to a point where it effects their physical abilities. Thus, Bowser is able to empower his own servants with it as well as rendering the Mushroom Kingdom's defenders helpless.
But the Princess wasn't home when Bowser attacked, so he wound up kidnapping Mario, Luigi, and the entire palace staff instead. When Princess Peach gets home, she finds everyone gone, and sets out to defeat Bowser and rescue her defenders. And Princess has total control over her emotions, thus making her the exact right person to take Bowser on this time. She's also given a magic, talking umbrella for good measure.
Gameplay:
D-pad moves. Action buttons jump, attack with the umbrella, scoop enemies up to use as projectiles or consumed for Vibe power, and throw said enemies. Touchscreen controls the Vibes.
You have health and Vibe bars at the top of the screen. Health drains as you take hits; Vibe drains as you use vibes. Health can be restored by finding heart items or using the Calm vibe; Vibe can be restored by finding crystals or having the umbrella consume enemies.
Peach has four vibes:
Happy - Peach creates a whirlwind around herself. This can be used to attack flying enemies, blow away clouds, and get rid of toxic smoke and dust. She can also fly when using this one.
Sad - Peach cries. Her tears cause plants to grow, and damage fiery enemies, as well as getting rid of columns of flame that block your path. Peach also runs really quickly when using this one.
Angry - Peach is surrounded by an aura of flame. This can be used to attack enemies and get rid of icy obstructions, as well as burning wooden bridges. When Peach jumps while this Vibe is active, she pounds the ground, activating switches and damaging nearby enemies.
Calm - While this Vibe is active, Peach constantly regenerates Health. This one will help a lot with surviving boss fights.
As Peach progresses through the game, she gets coins that can be used to buy new abilities for her umbrella, such as shooting energy-blasts, pounding the ground, and generating coins when enemies are attacked with the umbrella. She can also extend her Health and Vibe bars by spending coins.
Each level is multiple screens long, and has three Toads to rescue.
And I'm rambling. The point: if you own a DS, and enjoy side-scrolling platform games, get this one. It's the best I've played since Super Mario Bros. 3.
