So, last night I made a character for a buddy's Exalted game thats just started up, and ran part of our character's prologues (if you've played Vampire before, it shouldn't be a foreign concept...basically roleplay out the event in which your character becomes supernatural).
I was impressed. Character creation took up a decent amount of the time, but it was involved and flexible...the two PCs of the campaign are of the same class (or Caste in Exalted) but we came out with radically different characters. We both made Night Caste (roguey) characters, but my friend made a stealthy, thrown weapon specialist while I created an athletic, rough-n-tumble brawler.
Power wise, our characters could probably snap elder vampires like toothpicks, but that goes along with the general feel of the game...like a cross between Fist of the North Star [the power of characters and the names of charms (spells)] and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (the combat feels very much like a kung fu movie. I even have a charm that'll let me balance perfectly on bamboo stalks).
And, if you don't want to play a tricked out Exalted, but still like the Exalted take on the d10 system, the book has rules for making mundane human characters.
I give Exalted a 4.5 out of 5.

So I stopped by the bookstore a few days ago and got two books that caught my eye. The first is A Feast for Crows, the latest book in a series by George R. R. Martin. The second was Exalted Second Edition.
This edition of Exalted has a lot of aspects I like. Instead of having to split your die pool to dodge and parry, your characters have static values [(Dex + Dodge + Essence) / 2] for doge and [(Dex + Melee or Martial Arts + weapon defense value) / 2] for parry.
The new edition of Exalted also has initiative rules that I really like. Almost a combination of more traditional initiative and the system found in the Heroes System. Every character has a 'Join Battle' value equal to Wits + Awareness. At the start of combat everyone rolls this. Whoever gets the most successes acts at tick 1 (Ticks are rounds or actions in combat, each representing about one second) and the rest subtract their number of successes from the winners value to determine which tick they start on. The highest possible tick start is tick 6. Weapons and actions have a speed value. This value is the number of ticks that pass before a character can act again after using that action or weapon. For instance a greatsword has speed 6. After attacking with a greatsword a character must wait six ticks to act again.
I like the idea of ticks, but I'll likely be posting an alternate system of it in my personal crunch section before to long.
I give Exalted Second Edition a 5 out of 5.
