You have Lakeshire, a happy little anarchist commune full of level 20-30 Alliance heroes. Suddenly, the Local Defense channel activates. There's a level 50 Tauren Warrior killing every PC in sight. Lakeshire is under attack.
How do the adventurers in Lakeshire respond? The default response, by most people, is to simply endure the attacks, perhaps complaining, but just keep playing as well as they can. This grants all the power to the Tauren Warrior, creating autocracy.
Someone could fly to Stormwind, seek help. They could find a level 60 Human Paladin to return with them and deal with the problem. However, now, they are reliant upon this Paladin for protection. To lose the Paladin's goodwill means the return of the Tauren, or some other high-level Horde ganker. They must do whatever they can to retain the Paladin's goodwill. This is feudalism.
They could handle the problem themselves, gathering as many people as they can together, forming a plan, attacking the Tauren in force. However, for this, they must choose a leader or leaders to plan their attacks and organize the raid. This is republic.

An instering insight upon raid defense. Here's my story
When the Alliance attacked Hillsbrad with around 8 or more 60s, I got people to seek help from the Undercity, and after a while we drove them back and countered by attacking Southshore.
That attack failed miserably.
Then the Alliance attacked the Undercity and mass slaughter ensued. The hall to the throneroom was littered with skeletons. The Alliance got horrificaly slaughtered.
The moral is...um...the Alliance on my server shouldn't be gay and bite off more and/or less than they can handle. They should bite off none at all.
