I don't write poetry often...only once or twice a year, although it does tend to occur in binges. I've noticed two distinct themes in my upset poetry...
First of all, if I'm really, really emotional, I tend to write in free verse. Somewhere on my desk in Slidell is a three page long free verse poem I wrote after my last attempted romance (in Slidell) fell through.
When I'm just in a rut and need to work things out in my head, my poetry tends to be much more organized, usually haikus or that diamond form at the beggining of the thread. Those two I posted that rhyme are an utter rarity in my work...probably inspired by all the sonnets I've had to read this year for Brittish Literature.
So...anyone else introspect enough to figure out how and why they write depressing, emo poetry? ^^

I write depressing, emo poetry when I want to torture the world with my absolute lack of poetic talent.

I'm all too familiar with "emo poetry". I tried writing it one time and it never seems to go well with me. I found myself shrugging off what I had written as good but trite and unoriginal.
When I write something, I want to be the first to present something in a certain way. Most depressing poetry has already been written in some form or another. While "emo poetry" a major trend among modern poets and songwriters, it gets old when there's nothing to set it apart from the numerous other poems of the same work.
But worst of all is happy poetry. It just makes you want to cut yourself.

Hm...the thing with me, is that the poetry I write isn't for other people. Its to help me cope with life. I often show my work to others, because I -do- fancy myself a writer, but their primary purpose is stress relief.

I do the same, but when I do write, I hate producing something that's already been produced time and time again.
It makes me feel desperately like everyone else. I express myself by expressing something I've never seen before. Only then do I feel accomplished. When I write, I want to create something new.
